May is Bike to Work Month!

Last month I went to a fun and exciting lunch meeting at Sustainable Connections. It was all about Bike to Work Month, and the talk was about how to inspire and motivate your employees to try bicycling to work. Well, I have no employees to motivate, so I turn to you my dear customers, readers, and curious on-lookers.

Some interesting facts came up at the meeting. Did you know that
in the United States, more than twice as many bike trips are made by men than women? Ladies, let's get on our bikes! We can't let them win! If you have little kids, they make all kinds of interesting attachments now that kids can ride in. I see a lot of these around town --> Don't they look like fun?

Lovely Bicyle has a post about making cycling more comfortable for women, and menstruation is discussed. I was thrilled to see somebody mention Amy's Rag Bag in the comments because my liners are made for comfort on a bicycle. They're designed to be held close to your body with no contours to rub your thighs and no unneccesary length to bunch up. The all-fabric fasteners are designed for bicycling comfort as well. I often wear a liner on long rides even when I don't have my period, just for the extra comfort. It's no coincidence that my logo has a bicycle lady in it!

When it comes to biking, I'm really more of an addict than an activist. I got rid of my car a few months ago so I ride my bike just about everywhere. It's fun. The other day a guy yelled at me "Get a car, b&!@%!" But I knew he was just jealous because he has to pay $4 a gallon for gas and I don't. This is me about to head out for the farmers market yesterday morning.

This is a raffle post! Comment to enter. In honor of Bike to Work Month, your comment must have something to do with a bicycle. Post a comment about a happy bike ride you remember, a goal you have for future bike rides, some advice for new cyclists, or anything else at all about bikes. If you have your own blog you can also write it up there and then paste a link into the comments here.

One comment per person per month will be counted, but you can come back and comment every month. A winner will be randomly drawn on June 1 using this random number picker. The prize is $10 Store Credit.

The April winner is lucky comment #3. Congrats Flavorcrystals! I've added 10 credits to your account.

For the locals, the word of the week is bicycle. if you come up to my booth at the farmers market with your right pant leg tucked into your sock (or some other evidence of being a cyclist), I'll give you a free liner. My booth will be on the streetside of the market, facing Boundary Bay.

I haven't ridden a bike in

I haven't ridden a bike in awhile, I'm 16 too, but I also plan to start riding one again soon!

I still don't know how to

I still don't know how to ride a bike. I'm 16. This leaves me the choice of taking the bus or walking. but this summer I'm gonna do it! and finally learn how to ride a bike. (:

Entering Raffle.

I don't own a bike, but I have wanted a bike for about 6 years so I could ride along side my daughter... keeping my eye out on freecycle and craigslist...

Here goes nothing!

Your post has me motivated to get my bike brakes tightened and my chain repaired. My car currently needs about $3,000 worth of repairs. I don't have $3,000. But I do have working legs and the strong desire to make it the three miles to work and the farmer's market! I'm going to drop my bike off for a tuneup and give riding the 'Ham a shot. Thank you for the push. I won't melt in a little rain. I hope!

I live to far to cycle to

I live to far to cycle to work (have to catch a train every day!) though I did consider taking a bike on the train, we have an issue with thieves here... So for the time being I walk to work, but I'm looking into "public" rental bikes. I think it's really the best way to go - we're lucky enough to have quite a few bike lanes here, so it's not too dangerous compared to other places! :)

Bikes

I was so excited when my parents brought my old bike from Ohio to NYC for me... What a letdown it turned out to be when I realized that people here are jerks (yeah, I know, it's New York) and I was just entirely too scared to ride it anywhere for fear of being run over!

I keep toying with the idea of getting a nicer one and riding it around the parks near my apartment, but there are so many other things to worry about right now...

Watching my son

My son has been really interested in bicycles lately. And it's so much fun to watch him try to ride. I went out and bought one of those bicycles that has a seat for a child on it, and we've been riding around the neighborhood. He loves it, and it's great exercise for me. Plus, I just love seeing him so happy.

I wish I could bike to work,

I wish I could bike to work, but as I live about 30 miles away, it's not very practical. But I am planning on doing lots of other biking in May, and I'm hoping it'll be warmer/less rainy than April was!

This rocks.

1. This post makes me realize that this is the week to dust off my Schwinn.
2. This post also makes me realize that I need to stop by the booth on Saturday.

Thank you for providing such an awesome product!

Aw I wish I could go! I never

Aw I wish I could go! I never get to do any fun stuff.

I'm looking forward to getting paid so I can buy more pads. The ones you have in shop are adorable!

One of the big reasons I'm

One of the big reasons I'm excited about leaving the L.A. area is being able to use a bike again! It's just too dangerous to be a cyclist here, and without a car or competent public transit system, I'm really limited in where I can safely travel. Anyway, thanks for running this raffle, and for promoting Bike to Work Month!

It's hard to pick one bike

It's hard to pick one bike memory... I think most of my best memories from childhood involved my bike. Such a great sense of freedom for a kid! :o)

In light of what the

In light of what the commenter above me said, that's how I learned to ride a bike! My dad took the pedals off and I learned how to balance the bike. I didn't realize, but maybe it's not all that commonly done. It's a good method!

edit...

edit: that should read, "the commenter BELOW me." :)

I take my Golden Retriever on

I take my Golden Retriever on bike rides all the time! We have a WalkyDog attachment so she can't yank the bike out from under me, and we have a great time! I have been avoiding bike rides on my period, and am about to have my first period with cloth pads. Amy's Rag Bag is the next brand on my list to buy, specifically because of the bike-seat-friendly style! Coincidentally, I am getting up to take Coco on a bike ride as soon as I submit this.

I learned recently that

I learned recently that apparently in parts of Europe, when children are learning how to ride bikes, instead of putting training wheels on the bikes, the pedals are taken off and the bikes are pushed along with the feet until the child gets the hang of balancing it. I think that makes so much sense! My son is only 20 months but once he's old enough to learn, that's the way I want to approach it. I'm really looking forward to riding bikes with him when he's older! My dad used to take me and my sister on bike rides around the neighborhood, usually with him on foot, and it was always lots of fun. :)
